Backyard poultry keepers constantly seek ways to enhance the health and productivity of their flocks. One of the most effective innovations in poultry care is the use of nipple drinkers, which are quickly replacing traditional open drinkers in backyards.
IMPROVED HYGIENE AND CLEANLINESS
One of the standout benefits of nipple drinkers is the significant boost in hygiene. Open drinkers can easily gather contamination from droppings, dirt and spilled water, creating a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. In comparison, nipple drinkers contain water, drastically reducing the risk of contamination.
For instance, studies show that using nipple drinkers can reduce illness in poultry by nearly 30% compared to traditional drinkers. By limiting exposure to harmful pathogens, these drinkers create a healthier environment. This improvement is vital for raising healthy chickens and avoiding health issues linked to poor drinking conditions.
ENCOURAGMENT OF NATURAL DRINKING BEHAVIOR
Chickens have an instinctive way of drinking water using their beaks, much like in the wild. Nipple drinkers mimic this behavior, requiring chickens to peck the nipple to access water. By replicating their natural drinking habits, these systems can foster healthier drinking practices.
In fact, research indicates that chickens using nipple drinkers are 15% more inclined to drink adequately, promoting hydration and overall health. The intuitive design reduces stress among birds as they adapt quickly to this new water source. Happier, less stressed chickens tend to be more productive, laying more eggs and leading active lives.
EASE OF MAINTENANCE
A reliable and clean water supply is crucial for poultry care and nipple drinkers shine in this respect. These systems typically require less frequent cleaning than open drinkers. Because the water is contained, algae growth and debris are far less an issue.
Checking and refilling drinkers associated with nipple drinkers is often quicker and easier. This efficiency allows you to spend more time enjoying your flock rather than dealing with hydration needs and cleaning.
BETTER FOR BEHAVIORAL ENRICHMENT
Nipple drinkers also promote engaging interactions for your chickens. The pecking mechanism encourages natural instincts, which helps reduce boredom and stress. Engaged birds are typically more active and curious, leading to better overall health.
By incorporating nipple drinkers, you enhance not only the drinking habits of your flock but also overall well-being. Providing effective behavioral enrichment can significantly reduce stress-related issues.
EASY INSTALLATION AND VERSATILITY
Modern nipple drinkers come in various designs and sizes, making them adaptable to different setups and environments. Whether you have a small or large flock , there is a nipple drinker that will work for you.
A good quality nipple drinker we have used at the ranch which comes with a detachable cord perfect for colder months is an All Season heated nipple drinker made by Premier One Supplies.
Installation is generally straight forward and requires minimal tools. This ease means that even beginner poultry keepers can enjoy the many benefits without extensive prior experience.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Poultry nipple drinkers provide numerous advantages over traditional open drinkers. With improved hygiene, reduced water waste and better flock dynamics, these drinkers offer significant benefits that enhance the health of your chickens.
While transitioning demands some adjustments, the positive impact on your flock's health and productivity makes it worthwhile. Always remember that providing clean, accessible water is the success of poultry keeping.
To train your chickens to use nipple drinkers, eliminate all other water sources, as they will naturally prefer open drinkers. During the summer heat, we provide a few additional watering bowls to ensure they stay hydrated. In hot weather, they can't have too many waterers.
The advantage to the All Season Nipple Drinker from Premier One Supplies, is the fact that is is insulated. On the extremely hot summer days, we put a couple frozen water bottles in the drinker to keep the water cool.
FACT: Chickens will not drink water that is warmer than their body temperature.
TWO OPTIONS OF POULTRY NIPPLE DRINKERS
With the first option we have a fairly simple DYI project for a fraction of the cost.
First Option:
The first item, a black or dark coloured bucket is the best option as it is not going to prohibit the growth of algae.
That was our mistake when we made these a couple years ago, we used a white bucket, the issue is light gets inside, so we are cleaning them a lot more often.
The second item is the Poultry Nipple Waterers.
To install the plastic nipple drinkers you need to drill a hole in the bucket (5/16" or 11/32").
Screw the nipple waterers into the drilled holes.
We like to sit our waterers on wooden stumps instead of hanging as they are more steady with no movement.
In the winter months we have used an aquarium heater ( in the past when we first started our chickening adventure) submersed in a bucket to keep the water from freezing. Just the smallest heater is needed.
Second Option:
This option is to purchase an All Season Heated Poultry Waterer and we own 5 of them. They are the best waterers we have ever used. We have not found another drinker that compares.
Features include:
*holds 3 gallons of water
*insulated
*detachable cord
*anti-perch lid
*automatic thermostat (turns on and off as needed)
*never any algae growth, stays clean 100% of the time (light can not get inside)
*( have never had any problems with metal nipples freezing in the winter)
